In late 1941 the Belgian adminisration took the initiative to have Roma and Sinti compulsorily registered as a “race”. They became the second official ethnic category in occupied Belgium after the Jews.
The first mass round-up of Jews was held in Antwerp on 15 August 1942. Mayor Delwaide and Police Commissioner Jozef De Potter ordered their men to assist the Germans.
