Dora Hackena and her baby daughter, Clarisse, 1941
A Belgian Jew, Dora Hackena, was born in Ostend and gave birth to Clarisse in Antwerp on 6 June 1941. A single mother, she lived on Isabellalei. She was arrested with her baby during Aktion Iltis, the last nighttime raid carried out in Belgium, and which was aimed at rounding up Jews with Belgian nationality. The day after her arrest, on 4 September 1943, mother and daughter were put down for deportation on Transport 22 B of 20 September 1943, which was reserved for Jews of Belgian nationality.
When Transport 22 B arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau on 22 September, the SS immediately sent 70% of the women and girls to the gas chamber. This young mother and child represented the very thing the judeocides wished to rid the world of.
