These German refugees are thought to have escaped from Holland, where a programme of mass deportation had been started earlier. After their arrest in Belgium they were imprisoned in the Saint-Gilles prison with a group of eight other Jewish fugitives, and were delivered by the Judenabteilung to the Dossin Barracks in time for Transport 2 on 11 August 1942. Upon arrival at Auschwitz-Birkenau, 481 of the deportees were gassed. The Reiss-Levins disappeared without a trace.
