Samuel and Juda Guttmann were born in Antwerp, Samuel in 1934, and Juda in 1932. Their mother, Gizela Rozenberg, emigrated from Romania in 1923, and their father, Ernö Guttmann, from Hungary in 1927. The couple settled in Antwerp, where they worked as diamond cutters.
Ernö Guttmann was 42 when he was arrested during the third raid in Antwerp. He was taken to the Dossin Barracks on 11 September 1942. The very next day he was deported on Transport 9 and disappeared from the record.
Ernö’s wife, Gizela Rozenberg, and their two sons, Samuel and Juda, escaped molestation by the authorities when Ernö was arrested. He was probably picked up in the street and the Feldgendarmes did not bother going to his home at 12 Lange Van Ruusbroeckstraat – even though this was a street that had given up many of its occupants during the raids. Gizela Rozenberg, 38, and her two children, Samuel and Juda, 8 and 10 respectively, were arrested at the end of October. They arrived in the Sammellager on the 30th and were put on Transport 17. Upon the arrival of the transport at Auschwitz-Birkenau on 3 November, the mother and her two young sons were condemned to death.
