The Morgenstein family: Anna Morgenstein, her sister, Simone, her brother Henri, the father Marcel Morgenstein on the right in the second row, the eldest, Gela, on the left
The Morgenstein-Szymkowicz family lived in Lens in the North of France. Marcel Morgenstein, 47, worked as a labourer and had emigrated from Poland. His wife, Majka Szymkowicz, 42, also came from Poland. The two oldest children, Gela, 17, and Mordka, 14, were born in Krzepice in Poland. The three others, Anna, 11, Simone, 9, and Henri, 5, were born in Lens and were French by birth. Even so the law did nothing to protect the children of Jewish immigrants. On 11 September 1942, the French police arrested them on behalf of the Germans and the Feldgendarmerie took them to the Dossin Barracks on 12 September.
