The Pichler-Unger family

This family of Austrian German Jews had settled in Schaerbeek, near Brussels, in July 1938.

Erika Pichler, 17 years old, went to the Dossin Barracks following her summons. This family of Austrian German Jews had settled in Schaerbeek, near Brussels, in July 1938. The father, Israel Pichler, 44, was a professional driver, and had been sent for forced labour in northern France in June. Her mother, Adela Unger, 40 years old, accompanied her youngest daughter even though she herself had not been summonsed. Her eldest daughter, Minna, 20 years old, was also summoned. All three were deported on transport 1 to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Upon arrival, 318 of the female deportees on the transport were admitted to the camp. The mother died after thirteen days. Erika lasted a week longer. But of Minna there is no further trace. the father arrived by train in Mechelen and was put on transport 16, which left on 31 october 1942. There is no further record of him.
