Abraham Hirchel Schönberg and his wife, Victoria Ubersfeld
Abraham Hirchel Schönberg was born in Oswiecim, a town in Upper Silesia which will forever be known by its German name: Auschwitz. Victoria Ubersfeld was born some sixty kilometres away in Krakow. Later they emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Belgium in 1919 with their baby, Ernestine-Esther. Abraham Hirchel was 61, Victoria 64, and their daughter 23, when they were arrested in Antwerp. They were among the first to be put down for Transport 12 on 26 September 1942, many of whom were Jews who had been caught in the ration stamp trap. The age of the parents would have mean that they would have been immediately marked out for execution on their arrival in Auschwitz. Even though only young, the daughter did not survive either.
