Hanna Karpowitz, 16 years old, was the first person to escape from a transport bound for Auschwitz and was the only person to escape from transport 1. A German Jew from Königsberg (Kaliningrad) she had taken flight in August 1939 and eventually settled in Schaerbeek. thus it is perhaps surprising that she answered the summons to go to the Dossin Barracks. After recapture, she was deported on the next transport and disappeared from the records.
