Serena Schachter emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Belgium in 1930. She worked as a maid in Antwerp, where she lived with Simon Mayer. Marguerite, their first child, was born in 1933 and was followed in 1939 by a second daughter, Mirjam. Serena and her children fled to France in May 1940. On 26 August 1942, they were arrested at the home of Father Vincent in Lacaune, where they were interned. They were subsequently held at Agde and Rivesaltes, before returning to Lacaune. Serena Schachter (31) and her daughters Marguerite (9) and Miriam (3) were transferred from the Saint-Sulpice camp to the Drancy assembly camp. They were deported via Transport 30 to Auschwitz-Birkenau on 9 September 1942. There is no further record of them. Given the age of the children, Serena Schachter and her daughters were most likely sent straight to the gas chamber on arrival.
