Zelman Ungerowicz, ca.1940

A Polish Jew, Zelman Ungerowicz, emigrated in 1925 with his parents. They settled in the Liège region, first at Seraing, and then in Liège. In 1936, Zelman graduated from the University of Liège with a degree in Germanic Philology (= Germanic Studies). Following the anti-Jewish order of 28 October 1940, he was forbidden to work as a secondary school teacher. In 1943, he went into hiding in the Condroz area of Wallonia. Arrested towards the end of the year, he was taken to the Dossin Barracks on 17 November 1943, and was put on Transport 23 on 15 January 1943. The rate of immediate execution for men on this transport was 59%. Zelman Ungerowicz was 44 and as there are no further records of him we cannot know the exact circumstances of his death.
