Maier Zicherman

The Zicherman family emigrated from Romania to Belgium in 1930. Hers Zicherman was a trader, while his wife, Chania Jungher, cared for the couple’s nine children. The family were in Antwerp when the occupation began on 10 May 1940. One of the daughters, Malea, died in the city eighteen months later. Hers and his daughter Louise were arrested during a raid in early September 1942 and brought to the Dossin Barracks. They were deported via Transport X to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Neither survived deportation. Two other Zicherman children, Maier and Sura, then fled to France, where they were arrested near the Swiss border. They were imprisoned at Belfort and deported from Drancy via Transport 46 to Auschwitz-Birkenau on 9 February 1943. There is no trace of Sura Zicherman (19) following her arrival. Like her father and sister, she did not survive deportation. Maier Zicherman (23) was assigned to the Golleschau sub-camp and put to work in a cement plant. He was executed by firing squad on 31 March 1943, after a failed escape attempt. His mother and five other brothers and sisters survived the war.
